 ABOUT US

Who we were,

Who we are,

Where we are going...

The YWCA has a proud history of serving women of all ages as times and needs changed.

In 1859, Boston was the first to use the name "Young Women’s Christian Association." Communities saw the need for young women to have affordable, decent housing as they moved from supportive home bases in rural areas to the cities to work in factories. They also needed recreation and social gatherings.

At the core of the YWCA’s work over the decades has been the recognition that not all women, or all people, have been treated equally. The YWCA has worked against discrimination of Native Americans, the Japanese during WWII and all people of color, while advocating for equality of all women.

As needs change, so do the programs that are offered: typing and cooking made way for computer literacy and culinary skills. Home management and nursing led to childcare and Certified Nurse Assistant Training. Leadership and networking help the women of today develop skills and contacts for the business world.

YWCA New Britain was formed in 1910 to serve the women of this area. Through the years, it has offered a cafeteria, housing, a swimming pool, gymnasiums to promote physical health, classes for the unemployed and non-English speaking, a thrift shop, clubs for senior citizens, dances and clubs for young people and young brides.

We are proud of our heritage and aware of our responsibility. You are invited to join the YWCA as we work toward equality for all while empowering women to be all they can be.
