New Britain/Hartford Sexual Assault Crisis Service
Counselor Advocate Training (CAT) Class

What:  A 40 -hour training program leading to certification as a volunteer Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor.   No prior experience or knowledge of sexual assault is needed to apply for the class.  A fee of $85 is required to cover costs of training materials for the class and is dependent upon volunteer commitment.  (A fee of $275.00 is required for persons taking the class for professional development purposes only.)

Volunteers will provide supportive counseling and advocacy to sexual assault survivors and their families through hotline calls and police and HOSPITAL ACCOMPANIMENTS.  it is suggested that VOLUNTEERS BE on call for at least three shifts a month, to maintain and exercise their knowledge and skills.  To maintain certification, volunteers must attend four hours of inservice training per year and attend annual supervision.

WhoAnyone interested in providing hotline counseling, and accompaniing survivors and their loved ones through hospital and police PROCEDURES.  Volunteers can also become involved in support group facilitation, community education, one-to-one counseling (in person), legislative lobbying, special projects, and fundraising.

Requirements: Volunteers Must committ to a volunteer commitment of 1 year- This includes 2 hotlines shifts/month.  Volunteers must have reliable transportation for hospital, police and court accompaniments. (this is not required of those who are taking the class for professional development purposes)

How Apply to become part of the class for volunteers. Fill out the questionnaire and reference form, and return it to the address above. you will be contacted at least a month prior to the start of the next class.

When:  Spring 2012: Beginning January 24th running until April 24th every Tuesday evening from 5:30-8:30pm. 

Why: Volunteers are the backbone of our organization and we cannot do our jobs without your help!  You can also gain VALUABLE training and experience.    

 

Dear Training Advocates:

Welcome to the YWCA of New Britain Sexual Assault Crisis Service Counselor Advocate Training Program.  We are excited that you have expressed an interest in joining our team and look forward to working with you in the effort to end sexual violence and support sexual assault survivors, their families and friends.

In order for us to prepare for this program, we ask that you review the enclosed information, complete the necessary forms and return them to us.  These forms, along with a pre-training interview, will assist us in assuring that your interest coincides with our needs.  After your paperwork has been received, we will contact you to schedule a pre-training interview.  If other considerations are needed let us know. 

The fee for this training is set up as follows: $85.00 to become a volunteer, or $275.00 if you are taking the class for professional development only (not volunteering for SACS).  All fees are payable the first week of class and are non-refundable. Alternative payment schedules can be arranged.
